Farm-campsite De Appelhoek is connected to an organic dairy farm located next to the enclosing dike of the Markermeer. This is a unique location in the typical landscape of the province North Holland. The scenery includes a great diversity with horticulture, meadows with cattle and flower bulb fields, which are a pleasure for the eyes, especially in spring.

On the farmyard there are ten large tent-pitches and fifteen large places for caravans. There is also a summer house to rent for five people. It is possible to add an extra bed. The farmer’s wife sells fresh dairy-products and the owners will be happy to give you a tour around the farm. Opposite the farm, on the other side of the dike, there is a small beach where children can play and their parents can enjoy the wonderful view over the lake and maybe see some traditional sailing ships passing by.

There is a large choice of cycle and walking tours on the dike and through the ribbon-shaped villages of West Friesland with its ‘stolpboerderijen’, a characteristic type or farm built in the shape of a cheese-cover. Around the farm you see an enormous diversity of birds. Nearby De Appelhoek there is a large colony of gulls, and numerous amount of swallows looking for a place to nest. The area is protected by the Birds Directive of the European Union. Take a ride by steam train along the old Hanseatic (Medieval League) cities of Hoorn, Medemblik and Enkhuizen. In Medemblik you can visit the Castle of Radboud and in Enkhuizen you should see the Zuiderzee Museum.
