‘Het Poelhuis’ is a local monument: already in 1319 the farm was mentioned in historical documents. The present main building dates from 1700. On this former dairy farm of 20 ha you find nowadays nature friendly managed fields, meadowland and extensive run grassland, where horses and cows graze. The accommodation has a very friendly atmosphere.
At this carfree campsite with fifteen pitches you find a lovely recreation room in the barn, where once the young cattle was held. Here you can find newspapers, magazines and information about the surroundings. Also in the barn you find the sanitary facilities with, among others, a bathroom for wheelchair users. Water is heated by solar energy. There is a kitchen with a washing machine and cooking facilities. All rooms are heated. On appointment there are excursions for groups with explanation about the farm and its management, the frog pool and the cellar for bats and the agrarian nature management. There are not a lot of playing opportunities for children.
The farm is situated in an old landscape with a lot of recreation possibilities. Many organic farms can be visited and many bicycle routes are available, like a nature and a butterfly route. There are many walking routes and special nature areas consisting of peat landscapes, like the Wooldseveen and Korenburgerveen. Just over the border with Germany you can find a colony of flamingos. Also in the vicinity are a herb gardens, an open air museum, wind and water mills and a stone quarry where, after appointment, you can try to find fossils and crystals. The recreation water Hilgelo offers possibilities for swimming, surfing and canoeing. Sometimes village walks are organized.
